ABOUT THE WORKSHOP SERIES

Welcome to the Nuts & Bolts Workshop Series - and welcome to my home studio!

I've chosen three big, important topics that often get skimmed over - perhaps because they are seen as dry or difficult.

Perspective and Basic Volumes are extremely helpful for a thorough understanding of forms in two dimensions.

Once you understand the basics of these topics, your own work gets easier and more fun. They are like a skeleton key you can apply to everything around you, whether organic or man-made, and will aid you in convincingly rendering not only your surroundings but subjects from your imagination. Finally, I've included Drapery as a perfect application for modeling the form and light and shadow.

I'll be presenting the topics in a approachable, concentrated format to get the information across and enable you to use it right away.

- Six consecutive days of instruction

- Three pithy art topics

- Three days of Guided Practice, open to all. You do not have to take a Workshop topic to attend

- Break for lunch and conversation - bring what you'd like, or snack on food and drink I provide

- You can sign up for any number or combination of days, from 1-6

DATES & TOPICS

DAY ONE

Saturday, March 27

10:30-4:30

Perspective: How it Works & How to Use It

After a brief but wide-ranging introduction, you will learn the basics of one-point, two-point, and three-point Western perspective and find out how multiple vanishing points work.

Learn how to make up objects in perspective from imagination. Then find out how to apply perspective to make sense of the real world around you. You'll explore railroad tracks, telephone poles, arched colonnades, windows of buildings, skyscrapers, interiors, furniture, round still-life objects and briefly, the human body, all in the context of perspective.

The class makes the fundamentals of perspective learnable and ready to apply.

DAY TWO

Sunday, March 28

Guided Practice Day

Mentored open studio day for all students. Come practice what you learned in Perspective class, or bring any project you'd like to work on in a friendly but structured setting. You can draw, paint, or collage. There will be plenty of material for you to work on here and a high degree of individual attention.

DAY THREE

Monday, March 29

Basic Volumes: Drawing the Cube, Cone, Cylinder & Sphere

After a brief art history lesson relating to these simple but powerful forms, you'll study each of them in pencil and charcoal to understand their particularities of shape. The lesson includes a mini-lesson on perspective as it relates to these forms, as well as an in-depth look at modeling the form, and light and shadow.

Learn how to draw these shapes from life as well as from memory. Includes a demonstration of how basic volumes can be used to understand complex, real-life objects and natural forms.

DAY FOUR

Tuesday, March 30

Guided Practice Day

Mentored open studio day for all students. Come practice what you learned in Basic Volumes class, or bring any project you'd like to work on in a friendly but structured setting. You can draw, paint, or collage. There will be plenty of material for you to work on here and a high degree of individual attention.

DAY FIVE

Wednesday, March 31

Drapery: Understanding and Drawing Folds of Cloth

Drapery is one of the great subjects in art history, with the beauty of many paintings, drawings and sculptures hingeing on the graceful and artfully constructed fall of cloth.

In our modern dress, while satin robes may be less frequent, it is still important to understand the ins and outs of drapery as it appears in clothing, curtains and still-lifes.

This rich topic is also a perfect opportunity to apply elements of basic volumes, modeling the form, and light and shadow. You'll learn the fundamentals of creating convincing folds of cloth in each of these contexts, with a look at pattern on draped cloth as well.
