About your included Private Mentoring session

Private Mentoring is what I call the Rocket Fuel of art instruction. I believe so strongly in its effectiveness that I include up to an hour and a half for each student in every class at Julia's Studio.

In your Mentoring session, your work gets a personalized boost of attention. It's a unique and effective way for you to get the most out of your art class.

In your time with me you can ask any questions you want, see a demo, share an idea, request a critique, practice a technique or try a new one, or work on anything else you choose. In my experience, we frequently make important discoveries in private sessions that add dimension to what we do in class.

You can bring anything you want to work on - paintings, drawings, other projects, or simply your questions. You can also request an exercise if you aren't sure what you'd like to focus on.

Private Mentoring sessions are held at my home studio-with-a-view. You can reserve a time as soon as your space in the class is confirmed.

I love questions!

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Continuing Painting: Choice & Voice

In Choice & Voice you continue to develop your painting technique and repertoire of subjects and approaches in an ongoing class, reinforcing skills as you transition from the "how" of painting to "what" to paint.

Specific exercises in creativity help you to develop your individual studio practice in a supportive environment (whether your studio is at home or in class), and gently guide you toward finding and developing a personal artistic direction.

Exercises include identifying one or more painters whom you admire to study in-depth for key elements that you can use as jumping-off points in your own work. Share ideas with your classmates as you progress in your own practice.

Focus topics include the interior, views outside from inside, abstract painting, working from photographs, and a special introduction to painting the figure, designed to make the subject accessible and fun. With a simple approach you will be drawing and painting the figure in no time. Includes one session with a live model.

Advanced techniques include subtractive painting, emphasizing three-dimensionality, use of line, filtering color and value, texture, and manipulating drawing to serve your compositions. Explore a theme in a series of studies and learn to develop longer paintings.

Investigate the difference between “voice” and “style” and gradually build toward a painting practice
that is true to you.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Painting in Acrylics 1
This four-part program is designed to introduce you to the fun and challenges of painting, with a foundation of skills and concepts that build on each other. Try one quarter, or take the entire, year-long program.

The curriculum includes drawing, painting technique, color mechanics, composition and art history discussion, with a combination of creative, technical exercises and applied practice.

You work from reproductions, the still-life, the view outside, and the room around you. Learn direct painting, as well as how to use washes, glazes, scumbles, and impasto techniques to build a varied, indirect surface. Learn how to mix colors with understanding and accuracy.

In addition, you learn to develop original compositions while incorporating lessons learned from past and modern masters into your work.

Try painting for the first time, or deepen your color work and technical range. Discover how acrylics can be both precise and loose. Join an ongoing conversation about art that builds your awareness and appreciation of the dynamics and history of art and informs your own creative thinking as you learn to paint.

Lots of individual attention, demonstrations and guidance. No experience necessary.

Picasso, Bull (Plates I - IX), 1945, Etchings

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Drawing & Expressive Design
In this class you continue to build your drawing skills and take them to the next level while you develop your expressive voice. You work with exercises that build your visual vocabulary, strengthen creativity, sharpen accuracy, and hone composition and technique.

Focus topics include drawing outside views from inside,
drawing complex and simple household objects, drawing shiny objects, drawing from photographs, using color in your drawings, and generating abstract drawing.

In addition, the class includes an introduction to figure drawing that simplifies the complexity of the human form. Work from a professional art model on one of the days and find out how much you already know about drawing people. We'll also look at the clothed figure, using each other as compositional elements within the context of the interior.

Concepts and tools encompass line, gesture, proportion, relationships, shape, planes, volume, light and shadow, anatomy, design, space and composition.

You begin to identify what ideas and artists interest you and make an extended series of studies. Analyze
reproductions for design and composition and make your own versions of these master works. Along the way, you'll learn to keep a sketchbook and develop your own drawing practice. The class includes an art history conversation relating to each lesson, lots of demonstrations and individual attention.
